Where did all of Apple’s iPhones go?

Posted on 29 January 2008 by Phoenix

Earlier this week it was noted that 1.4 million iPhone were unaccounted for.  After another analyst did a review it seems that the iPhones are not actually missing.

“Some unknown number of iPhones are being unlocked by purchasers and some, probably a larger number, are being unlocked for resale,” said Gottheil. “Some are in inventory. Some will be returned. And some are being used for the non-phone features, as iPhone Touches, until the owners can change their wireless contracts.

“We don’t know the proportions,” Gottheil added.

All in all, it seems that Apple just might make their estimated quota of 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008 after all.

iJailbreak goes wireless! iJailbreakMobile 1.0 released

Posted on 29 January 2008 by Phoenix

AriX the 13year old developer and his partner Ben(co-developer) have just released a “mobile” version. In other words, this works off of WiFi. No connection to your computer is required.

Even though I don’t personally recommend this particular method as I am unsure as to whether he uses Nate True’s method. Because it seems that Nate’s method breaks DRM. It is definitely worth the mention.

For those who are wondering, the 1.1.1 jailbreak is based on the Nate True method while the 1.1.2 jailbreak is based on the iPhone Dev Team method. As such, iJailBreakMobile is released under the GNU General Public License version 2.

All you have to do is add a source to your installer and go from there. It is just that simple.

If you are interested in this you can go to AriX’s website and check it out for yourself. You can be the judge

Create a custom iPod Touch/iPhone Web clip for your website.

Posted on 28 January 2008 by Phoenix

The new iPod Touch/iPhone 1.1.3 firmware has a nifty little function that creates web clips for your favorite websites.  By doing this, it takes a snapshot of the webpage and creates a custom icon bookmark for your iPod Touch/iPhone desktop so that you can easily access the site later.

That is really cool you say.  Well, what if that is just not enough.  What if you wanted to add your own custom image so that others can  see your custom logo rather than a snapshot.  Well, have no fear we have the tips for you.

Here’s what you do.

Apple even makes it easy for you to do.  You don’t even have to be extra creative.  Safari will automatically convert the image into an icon that looks like it was made for the iPod Touch/iPhone.

  •  Create a 57×57 png.
  • Design an image that you want to use and save it as  ”apple-touch-icon.png”
  • Then upload it to the root folder of your website. Not the root of your server.

Note: if you don’t have access to your root folder or you would rather use something other than a png image.  You can simply add it to your header line. Simply upload it to your site, copy the link of the image and and follow the directions below.

<head>
<title>yoursitehere</title>
<link rel=”apple-touch-icon” href=”/yourimage.jpg”/>
</head>

Thats it. Now you have a custom Web clip for your website.

You can use a bigger size image if you wish. It may provide for a little more crisp image. I myself, used a 158×158. Don’t worry, Safari will automatically resize the image, round the corners and put a glassy overlay for you.

Here is mine as an example of what it will look like.

My original image.

After Safari has done it’s thing

Hope you find this as useful as I have. If you want more information you can visit iPhone Dev Center, you will see a section referring to creating web clips.

Dev team launches OFFICIAL 1.1.3 jailbreak for the iPod Touch/iPhone

Posted on 28 January 2008 by Phoenix

That’s right.  The official version has now been released to the public.  Just what everyone has been waiting for.

I posted a couple days back where Nate True released an unofficial version.  This indeed was a sloppy job compared to the dev team’s release.  According to a mod over at the ipodtouchfans forum the real problem with Nate’s version is that,
and I quote from SkylarEC,

Nate True’s method breaks DRM, and that’s where the whole app issue came from to being with. By using the Dev Team method, DRM is not broken. That of course means that besides apps working and synching, you can also listen to music you bought off of the iTunes store.

This is the problem that I was discussing previously in my other thread.

If you want a cleaner more refined version of the jailbreak you can go over to Hackintosh forums, where all of the dev’s hang out and download your copy and start running a fresh jailbroken 1.1.3 firmware for your iPod Touch/iPhone

If you are not savvy enough to do all of this on your own. It has been implemented into the installer app.
Let’s all thank SkylarEC for making that possible.

To do this you will need to:

  1.  Make sure you have a JailBroken 1.1.2 Device.
  2.  More than 160MB free on your root partition. Move Applications to /private/var/Applications if necessary.
  3.  Make Sure you have BSD SubSystem 1.5 or later installed on your iPod.
  4.  Make Sure you set AutoLock in Preferences to NEVER.
  5. Make Sure you are plugged Into a computer.
  6. Make sure you have SEVERAL minutes to wait.
  7. Make sure you are ready to update.
  8. Make Sure you have http://www.touchrepo.com/repo.xml installed in your sources in Installer.
  9. Download “1.1.3 JailBreak (DEV TEAM)
  10. Wait several minutes.

The iPod will now boot into 1.1.3. [Source: http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30617]

Please note that this process may take up to 40min or so. Some have completed it in shorter times however it is based on your internet connection as this is being done over WiFi. Mine took exactly 31 minutes from start to finish w/reeboot.

If you have any questions you can ask them here and I will try and help or you can visit the links to the sources that I have provided.

A big warm thank you for the Dev Team for releasing this valuable update and to Skylar for making this available on the installer.

iPhone Dev team member supposedly gets the boot

Posted on 25 January 2008 by Phoenix

Well it seems that supposedly  Nate True has leaked information that should not of been leaked yet.

The information that he provided concerning the Jailbreak for 1.1.3 iPhone software seems to contain files that are illegal to have according to Apple and he has supposedly been kicked off of the dev team for releasing said information without permission.  Please note that this is a working jailbreak method however it is an UNOFFICIAL release.

Source here:http://www.zdziarski.com/

It seems that this method is unstable and I do not recommend this.USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!

According to Nate True:

Regarding the drama about this release - there is identifying information in the patches, that contains pieces of the firmware as markers for what changes should be made to it. None of it is in any sort of useful form until it is merged again with a real 1.1.3 firmware image, which is downloaded directly from Apple.
Source HERE

So, we will see how this unfolds soon enough.  I will keep you up to date on an OFFICIAL iPod Touch release of the jailbreak method.

Jailbreak 1.1.3 is out for the iPhone. iPod Touch soon to follow.

Posted on 25 January 2008 by Phoenix

Nate True over at Cre.ations.net reports that the 1.1.3 Jaibrake for the iPhone has been released. Unofficially. UPDATED SEE NOTES AT BOTTOM

I am not held responsible for anything that you download or do to your iPhone. I only provide this as informational purposes. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK and DO NOT TRY THIS METHOD WITH THE IPOD TOUCH. Please wait for a compatible version for your iPod Touch
Here is the procedure:

STATEMENT OF RISK

As all upgrades are risky, this one is doubly so. You may have to restore your phone using iTunes and start again if it fails. Make sure to back up first!

Let’s continue

This jailbreak, like the 1.1.2 jailbreak, comes as an upgrade. This means you need to have a 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 jailbroken phone already, before you can begin.

Update - unlocked phones appear to remain unlocked and work properly after the update, according to scattered reports.

MAC VERSION - Download the 1.1.3 package maker and open it, then run Run_This. Read carefully, press Enter when necessary, and the image will be uploaded to your phone.

Here’s how you do it:
- Start with a 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 jailbroken phone with Installer.app installed.
- Plug in your phone via USB to your computer.
- Download, extract, and run iBrickr Special 1.1.3 jailbreak edition (ibrickr.exe in the archive).
- iBrickr will determine what firmware you are running on your phone and make sure you can run the update.
- iBrickr will then guide you through the process of obtaining and modifying the 1.1.3 firmware (make sure to read everything thoroughly).
- iBrickr will upload the new firmware image to your phone. Note that this only puts the file on your phone and does not modify it at all, yet.
- When iBrickr finishes (should take about 10 minutes), it will tell you to go to Installer and install the “1.1.3 soft upgrade” package. Do that.
- When the installer finishes (this should take another 10-15 minutes), your phone should reboot with a fresh activated 1.1.3 firmware.

.

I will not provide the download links due to the fact that this is an UNOFFICIAL release. This issue has been cleared up and it seems that no illegal files are actually included. You can go to his site for the actual download.

UPDATE :It seems that there is a way for an iPod Touch to be jail-broken by way of replacing the iPod firmware with  the iPhone firmware however, until it becomes more clear and there is a more reliable method for the iPod Touch, I will not post it.

UPDATE #2 : See this thread “Getting the boot

Keep an eye out for more updates.
